Momoyama Sanmai Tsuba
Price: $600.00 -- Reduced -- Now $400!

A very nice Sanmai Tsuba from the Momoyama period with Bamboo, Plum, and Nanako. Sanmai is a method of construction in which a central plate is shaped and sculpted, then a thick sheet of another metal such as shibuichi or shakudo installed over the entire plate. This tsuba has a thick Shibuichi applied and the nakagoana, the hitsu, and the wear on the rim shows the construction. It is common to note the age of many fittings by the wear to their surfaces imparted during use and handling, much like the face of an old coin.

This tsuba shows the foil worn away exposing the foundation in the very place the samurai would have rested his left hand on the sword while wearing it. Therefore, this tsuba was proudly worn for many years and the compromise of the foil on the rim is historic, and not due to abuse or neglect. Measures 74.5 mm x 70 mm x 4.5 mm
